When is a training a proper training?

We have written a few articles on the current training trends in organisations as part of their learning & development efforts. In these articles, we spoke about agile, FOMO and employee engagement. But also, about how much time we actually spend on learning and about how to become a high-impact learning organisation. See the links at the bottom of this article.

People have no time (for training)

In our work to support organisations to make their learning more fun, easy to manage and more effective, we come across a lot of differences between organisations. Also, internationally, the culture of learning is a different one. However, there are many similarities and the key one is: people have no time. People perceive themselves as very busy, even too busy at times. This is why we also wrote on the ‘overwhelmed employee‘.

System satisfaction

As a result, we sometimes experience ‘system satisfaction’ or ‘legal satisfaction’ when it comes to training. It is considered a box that needs to be ticked and that should cost the least possible amount of time to organise or to manage. The fact that people will learn something that they can apply in their daily work activities is a secondary concern. It is not that people do not want it to be the first priority, they just do not have the time to give it the attention it deserves.

Mostly, we come across this in mandatory training (for example Health & Safety) and in corporate compliance, such as Code of Conduct documentation. However, the key question is: what is the moral requirement versus the legal requirement?

Training, testing and corporate compliance are a burden quite often. It is complicated, difficult to organise and to manage. We have even called it a Dark Art. In addition, people do not want to be disrupted for training. And their bosses don’t want to lose productive time to training activities.

To make things easy, we have created three different delivery methods, and they work in conjunction. You can pick either all three or choose the one(s) that you feel will serve your purposes the best:

  1. Learning: courses using our DuoTesting methodology, which causes accelerated learning and improved knowledge retention. While the system learns from the user with each question answered, DuoTrainin teaches the user by providing continuously tailored content.
  2. Testing: A single test, one-off or planned at regular intervals (the test is generated randomly from all course questions available), on any course or document.
  3. Corporate Compliance: the option to download any document, with a check box for the user to mark that he/she has read, understood and accepted the contents of the document.
