8 lessons regarding NWoW
The Dutch government building services will soon move to a new building, which it will share with the Ministry of Finance. In anticipation of the move, four departments have practised New Ways of Working.
And the results of this pilot are…
- The changes have mainly been achieved in the beginning, after which a new and fairly static situation can easily arise. New impulses are necessary, on a continuous basis
- The choice to assign each department its own budget has proven positive when the choices made support the work
- The diversity of workspaces is appreciated but it is not always recognised which working place is supposed to support which type of work. For example, a concentration cell being used as a meeting room
- Project-based work has increased as a result of NWoW. Over time, changes occur in the worktypes so the adaptability of the working environment is appropriate
- Two departments indicate that the interdepartmental cooperation has improved because its easier to get to know people and where to find them
- ICT has to work since it largely determines the level of flexibility the employees can have
- Culture differences are clear between departments mainly in the way disturbances (mostly people talking) are being handled
- Management should lead by example, for example by making available their own space when it is not in use
Unfortunately, there is no information about what this Dutch government organisation will do with these lessons learned. We will keep you posted on any new developments.
